Top Ways to Becoming Your Own Mentor

in Person

Mentor as described by Wikipedia is a trusted friend, counselor or teacher, usually a more experienced person. If we look at that explanation more carefully we will discover that a mentor is simply that someone who provides us with necessary knowledge, guidance and information that we yet do not possess ourselves. With that in mind another question arises - can we be our own mentors? Can we mentor ourselves into successful career, better relationships, ultimate health or perfect lifestyle? The answer is YES we can.

In the era of information being publicly available, courses and degrees that can be obtained online and publications on almost every topic you can possibly think of, it surely isn't out of reach to gain specific skills or knowledge required. Remember also that there never will be a person that knows you better than you know yourself. There will be no other person like you that can honestly evaluate your possibilities or one that can motivate you more than you're capable of motivating yourself. With that to consider let's have a look at what awaits ahead in order to mentor yourself:

Realize your strengths and weaknesses. Whether you want to improve your work life or build your self esteem, widen your social circles or finish a doctorate you need to know yourself. You need to know what are you working with. This is the most important step and skipping this part will bring you to step one each time. There is no personal mentoring without firstly evaluating your abilities and character. Get a piece of paper and divide it in half. One one side put all the positives about your person you can think of and on the other side put all the negatives of your personality. Add as many things as you can. The more aspects you cover the more helpful the list will turn out to be. Be honest with yourself. Don't cut yourself short. Include your acquired skills like competent in the use of Microsoft Excel or able to speak fluent Japanese and natural abilities such as being a people person or being a quick learner. Now have a look at your list and check if the both sides contain similar number of attributes. If not, you might want to add some more on one side or maybe you need to think about some confidence training because you might be undervaluing yourself. Remember that getting to know yourself is an ongoing activity, an ongoing evaluation and close investigation of constant change.

Come up with a plan. Write down all the things you want to achieve, the things you want to improve in and things you want to learn. Make it your goal list. Be specific and clear about your desires. If you don't know where you're going you will eventually end up somewhere that you don't want to be. Get it right. After you have a list of ultimate destination goals break them up into smaller units until you will end up with daily to do tasks. You can incorporate these small tasks into you schedule. Be your own secretary and organize your time effectively. If you think you might have a problem creating goals or scheduling your own time use what's been already written for you. There are numerous articles, books and workshops on setting effective goals and time management. Research the topic and learn how to do that right. Once you have a plan in place and an action plan to follow it through think about the tools and skills you will need to possess to fulfill your goals. Include acquiring of those tools and skills into your to do lists.

Create Yourself. Now that you have an action plan you need to put the face to the achievement. Do a quick exercise and imagine that you are somebody else, a reporter writing a piece about you. What would you write about yourself? Do you like what you're reading? Now think of yourself. What will you like to see yourself as? How would you dress in a perfect world? How would you talk? What would you be doing in your spare time? Now think about all the things and obstacles you will have to overcome to be that person, the person that you most want to be. Imagine that you have been given another shot at life but this time you won't be born but instead you will create yourself. In the epistemological thesis individuals are born without built-in mental limitations and all their knowledge comes from experience, the thesis is often referred to as tabula rasa. Tabula Rasa when translated from Latin means blank slate. Imagine that you have been given that blank page again and you will write on it as you desire. Use that blank page to finally be the person that you can be proud of, that you can admire and respect.

Hope that you will use these ideas and become the best mentor one can ever wish for. Be creative with it and never stop venturing, improving and questioning.
